HGUC MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam Review (Part 1)

I like ZZ Gundam. As the first combining gundam in the history, it’s a mix of super robot and real robot (of the 80’s) aesthetics. I also like how different, but still recognizable it is from Z Gundam, the predecessor. Or maybe it’s my tendency to root for underdog. Yes, compared to Zeta, ZZ is not really that popular. The fact that Bandai released this HGUC so late is one of the evidence. Still, I’m grateful that we get this HGUC anyway; and when I think about it, if this kit released years ago we may have more missing details or worse, no combining/transformation gimmick like HGUC S Gundam.

I decided to put more work into this guy, not just snap fit. I didn’t paint thoroughly like expert modeler though; just panel lining here, marker there, and some decals (from leftover of my MG kits). I also painted several spots gray, even though it’s not listed on manual. I did that so I can give it more mechanical feelings, since gray is associated with inner parts of a machine. I also ditch foil sticker for double beam rifle’s sensor and replacing it with clear green plastic that I cut from a CD case.

Articulation is so-so. It’s the fault of the design actually, with the arms suffered the worst. Huge backpack of ZZ (which is impressive-looking) will obstruct the shoulder and elbow mounted wings so it’s hard to pose the arms even for neutral one. Simple shoulder joint is quite a disappointment, it can only move forward very slightly and no upward movement. And the double beam rifle just makes things worse.

This double beam rifle is difficult to pose it under arm due to lengthy stock it has. So, over the shoulder style like a bazooka is much easier (although not anime accurate). Luckily Bandai has provided a groove on ZZ’s palm so the rifle handle can plug securely. If the wrist joint dragged down by the rifle’s weight, you can just push the wrist deeper to ‘lock’ it.

Bandai provided this 1/144 scale kit with clear beam saber parts from 1/100 line. This is intentionally done since hyper beam saber of ZZ is no ordinary beam saber. I think it should have been bigger, but this one will do. Just like the rifle, secure connection with arms also present here. However, you only got both rifle and saber holding arms for right hand only. This means you can’t dual wield the saber, or posing ZZ with both the rifle and saber. You only got closed fist for left hand, not even an optional open arm.

Other weapons of ZZ are integrated. There are two missile bays with working hatch, and devastatingly powerful high mega cannon planted on forehead. The fact that ZZ can fire a ray of doom from its forehead is also a trait of super robot :).
